My Australian wife isn’t keen on seashores or warm climate. She loves living in Ireland, in which sun and sand not often intrude along with her love of books, rain and the indoors. But she married someone who would happily spend his each waking moment on a beach. I blame my seashore obsession on Ballybunion, the north Kerry town in which I even have fortunately spent time every summer season on account that 1973.

One Easter, I controlled to pull Christine to Ballybunion’s Ladies’ Beach, which she turned into uncharacteristically reluctant to depart. Distracted through the stunning views of Loop Head and Mount Brandon, I hadn’t realised that Dominic West, the handsome actor from The Wire and The Affair, became playing football with his kids (his wife grew up in close by Glin Castle, Co Limerick). Ballybunion is complete of surprises.
My parents adore Ballybunion: it’s wherein my mom first noticed the sea at the age of 5, and many decades later, they still spend maximum sunny days at the seashore doing the crossword and analyzing the paper with a flask of tea and a coolbox complete of sandwiches.

It’s wherein my father taught me to swim. I can’t don’t forget a great deal supplying of approach; he had general accept as true with that the skill could come to me intuitively if he definitely dropped me in to the deep water. And he became right.

When I commenced to journey in addition afield in my 20s, the charms of Ballybunion appeared to light as Bali and Fiji beckoned. But now, after seeing a lot of the world, the city has called me returned, now with my very own younger son to educate a way to swim.

Ballybunion has modified considering my teenagers: the nightclubs, roller discos and multiple chippers are giving way to to surf faculties, outside yoga and take-away flat whites. My friend Kathy spent her formative years summers there too, “the scene of all my first crimes”, as she likes to describe it. Hopefully it’s still that sort of vicinity if you’re 16. Irish beach cities offer a sure freedom, the rules aren’t pretty the identical.

I love that Ballybunion has hung on to its edge – and its slot machines – even as also catering for those of us who take our espresso a little too significantly.
Take me to the beach

The Ladies’ Beach is Ireland’s ninth maximum popular seashore on Tripadvisor. Sandwiched among a cliff at one end and the city’s iconic castle on the opposite, it’s smooth to understand why this strip of sand has a unique area in lots of humans’s hearts.

Back in much less liberal times, the nearby priest could patrol the beaches, imposing the stern segregation of the sexes among the Men’s Beach and the Ladies’ Beach; even the terrible nuns have been regulated to their own seaside at a secure cast off on the alternative side of the cliffs.

Nowadays numerous hundred households drawn from Kerry, Limerick and Cork intermingle at the sand whilst the solar shines. “The beach become black,” is how my mother could describe the scene.

If life is getting me down, a day spent right here restores my temper immediately: all and sundry is satisfied, fathers play hurling with their daughters, gangs of teenage boys poke amusing at every others six-packs (or lack-of), and stoic, 70-something ladies in swim caps select their way via the group after their every day dip in the Atlantic.

Ballybunion does excellent sunsets; I like to walk the full 3.2km period of the beaches by myself at dusk whilst the mild is red. If the weather isn’t co-working and the beach is off limits, I end the day rather inside the hot-tub at the town’s leisure centre.
Waffely versatile

Ballybunion become in no way short of fast food alternatives, however I knew things had been converting ultimate summer season when I got here throughout a kiosk at the Castle Green serving home made waffles and carefully sourced clear out espresso. Seaside Ballybunion is administered by using Julia and Seb, surfers who traded in their lives in Germany to stay through the ocean in Ireland. Further up the main avenue there’s even a chocolatier, Gourmandises Time, in which French lady Veronica Auvert makes her very own cola flavoured marshmallows and raspberry and pistachio cheesecake. The tiny Thorobread Bakery sells the satisfactory chocolate croissants I’ve had outside of France.
Cliffhanger

The cliff walk above Ladies’ Beach is breathtaking, though now not for those scared of heights or edges. As a baby I become afraid of falling into the Nine Daughters’ Hole, named following the fate of the local women whose plan to disobey their father and run off with a gaggle of Vikings got here to a fast and brutal stop. In the evenings, the coves fill with hundreds of starlings getting ready to bed down for the night.
